Hiking in a Sandbox

Day 53– Dozens of dirt trails criss-cross before us. One of these trails is the PCT. The rest are all trails created by illegal dirt bikers… and therefore aren’t on any maps. Thankfully there are many PCT markers to help us navigate, but we still face difficult decisions as to which trail to take. And then we struggle across switchbacks on enormous slippery sand dunes. With every step we slide down the trail and then a cup of sand falls into our shoes. But at last we leave the sandy soil behind and hike through purple, red and yellow wildflowers and then woods. Just as the sun gets hot we reach a refreshing outdoor shower by the giant wind turbines.  At Willow Creek we run into Burning Daylight & Indi who were hitching to Mojave, but we continue on, camping beside Cameron Road and hopeful for a hitch into Tehachapi tomorrow.
